Researchers have devised a way to arrange arrays of nanoparticles onto a surface — such as a silicon chip — without damaging the material’s surface. The scalable technique could enable higher-performance devices like lasers, LEDs, sensors, and actuators.

A stroke left Debra Meyerson ’79, SM ’80 paralyzed on one side and unable to talk. Now, she has found her voice and is speaking out about stroke recovery and the lack of support for the mental and emotional aspects of healing.

Engineers have used optics to accelerate machine-learning computations on smart speakers and other low-power connected devices. “We’ve built a system that can operate with about a milliwatt of power but still do trillions of multiplications per second,” says Alexander Sludds.

Accessories like shoes come in countless shapes and sizes, so “Why can’t you customize and design your mask?” says Canan Dagdeviren. Her team developed a sensor that measures physical contact between a person’s face and their mask, to help design better-fitting options.
